This will mean that radical teachers indoctrinating students in their classrooms and school board officials will be able to DESTROY THE LIVES of people who disagree with their policies by simply claiming the member of the public caused them "mental anguish."
This bill will turn the First Amendment on its head and give left-wing activists the ability to weaponize the criminal justice system against citizens whose opinions they disagree with.

WHEREAS: The First Amendment to the United State Constitution enshrines the right to free speech and to petition the government for grievances; and
WHEREAS: House Bill 4474 uses vague language to create a felony for free speech that is perceived BY THE RECIPIENT as causing "severe mental anguish" and perceived BY THE RECIPIENT as being motivated by "hatred" for one's race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected classes; and
WHEREAS: House Bill 4474 will enable extremists to weaponize the criminal justice system to put those who question their ideology behind bars and devastate their lives; and
WHEREAS: House Bill 4474 will impermissibly chill free speech in Michigan, inverts the evidentiary burden required in all criminal cases, and allows people to be convicted not for any defined bad actions but by the mental perception of an alleged victim;
THEREFORE: I call on you to defend the Constitution, defend free speech and assembly, defend process of law, and vote NO on House Bill 4474, the Thought Crimes Act.
